A relay is a switch used to control a circuit either electronically or electromechanically. Relays consist of mainly five parts: The Electromagnet, armature, spring, two electrical contacts and a model frame. Some switches use an electromagnet as the electronic component. However, sometimes a manufacturer may use other methods to control the circuit such as solid state relays. Solid state relays have a sensor rather than the moving parts used in an electromagnetic switch. In solid state relays there are no contacts and are totally electronic.
Relays are often used by a manufacturer where a safe low voltage circuit controls a high voltage circuit, but it isn't possible to have a direct connection to the high voltage electronic component. If a higher current is being produced in the circuit, a manufacturer may use an electronic component that is similar to a relay called a contactor. A contactor can be used to control a large number of actions such as lighting in an office building, where the contactor works as the central control.
