Basically, a power transformer works like a converter. In most cases, it steps down higher voltages to lower voltages. This becomes clear, as the power lines standing in our countryside carry electricity up to 700,000 volts, although our electronic devices we use in industrial manufacturing and in our households is just about 110 and 250 volts. All Electronics have different voltages. So, we have to convert the high voltage into low voltage, and that is what transformers do: Converting AC power to DC power. Its functionality involves the magnetic field generated by its electric circuit and a voltage (a measure of electric force that drives electrons in an electric circuit). This two elements form the basis of the functionality of a power transformer. At substations, the power voltage is dropped to 7200V (Voltage).
Some more information: The transformer was invented during the 19th century in Europe from Ottó Bláthy, Miksa Déri and Károly Zipernowsky. After some prototypes and experimental uses, william Stanley Junior, Lucien Gaulard and Sebastian Ferranti further-developed and finalized the design.
